What do you guys think when a short story writer withholds information at the beginning of a story? For example, if there is a secret that one character is keeping from another, does the reader have to know what the secret is before the other character finds out? I've been playing around with this, but, honestly, I'm not sure. I think it could build tension if done correctly. I'm not talking about a big reveal ending. I'm just looking for the right place to clue the reader in.
