In search of a mentor

Hello,

I found Absolute Write while looking for a website that sets up people with writing buddies/critique partners. Reading these forums has been overwhelming. I'm not sure where to begin on my journey to be a better writer. I could use someone to take a look at where I'm at and help me figure out what to do next. I'm not asking for a critique partner or writing buddy. What I need is someone who can answer questions and give advice on how to find my place in the writing world. It doesn't have to be a long-term relationship, although I would certainly like it to be.

A little bit about myself: I'm a 29 year old bank analyst looking to eventually get out of banking and into writing. I've always had a desire to tell stories, although I've had a lot of trouble along the way finding encouragement and motivation. It took me seven years of college and a year at a completely unfulfilling job to admit to myself that I want to be a writer. It's been tough to write with a full time job, but I've been getting it done and making progress.

In 2008 I did NaNoWriMo and ultimately turned it into an 80,000 word novel. More recently, I decided that no amount of editing could fix its problems. But I believed in the story and characters and so I began to re-write. I'm about 47,000 words in and I'm feeling much better about it. To give you an idea of how lost I am, I don't even know what genre my novel is. My best guess is that it's near future (2040 or so) science fiction with horror elements. It's aimed at adults, but I wonder if I'd be better off imagining it as YA. The novel is about a young man undergoing a radical new form of psychotherapy designed to rebuild his psyche from the ground up. To do so, he must go on a journey of discovery through a world made of his hopes, fears and darkest desires.

Thank you in advance,
