experts not wanted :) brainstorming help w/a mathematic sentence

Here's my problem. I need to have my MC receive a short text that is intriguing and a little off as she drives her taxi. Since she has a strong mathematical and scientific bent, I decided to have someone send her odd dollar amounts that represent mathematical constants. Here's my first attempt:

$272

The odd amount was strange, especially since it was the first three digits of the famous mathematical constant e.

**

My phone beeped again. $314 if U wait.

The amount represented π, the most famous of all numbers. The odd bonuses were no longer a coincidence, especially considering my scientific expertise.

The problem is, not everyone knows what Euler's constant (e) is, and a small e looks strange, like I made a typo. Same issue with pi.

My question is how could I reword this so it is clear to readers of any mathematical level? Should I use the number's names or symbols in the novel? Should I give up on this idea, or does it have potential? It has to be a text, it has to be short, it must draw the character into a mystery, and it's on the 1st page of a novel that uses lots of technology.

And for the moment, don't worry why someone with a scientific background is driving a taxi!

Thanks for any brainstorming help.
