So I wanna know if this is plagiarism. If I copy a paragraph or sentence from a published novel,then switch up some words and change some of them to suit my story. Basically, keeping the general structure.
For example:
Monday evening after swim practice, Emily clomped up the stairs to the bedroom she and her sister Carolyn shared, shut the door, and flopped down on the bed. Practice hadn't been that grueling, but she felt so tired, like all of her limbs were weighted down with bricks.
Turns into:
Tuesday afternoon after gym class, Ruth clomped up the stairs to the dorm she shared with her roommate Lisa, slammed the door, and flopped down on the swivel chair. Gym class had been absolutely awful. She was overwhelmed with exhaustion, like her arms and legs were covered in concrete.

I've come to realize this is the only way I can write something that isn't choppy and awful.
Is this considered plagiarism?
