So apparently you should never connect any dependent clause to another clause - be it dependent or independent - with a colon or semicolon, unless you are listing items which include commas.
This sentence, therefore, is grammatically incorrect...
The creature then caught fire; a ferocious fire, comprised of flames red and yellow and blue.
But surely a comma doesn't work here either? What would you use? Am I right in thinking the quote above is is incorrect?
