Have Mainstream Magazines Reached a New Low?

samedi 10 octobre 2015

I'm going to ask you to put aside your political biases for a moment and consider the following two recent articles from major men's magazines - GQ and Esquire. And I don't really wish to debate the content of each Republican's words which elicited the profanity and scorn. What I would like to discuss is the approach both magazines used, within a day or two of each other.

GQ -- "F**K Ben Carson" http://ift.tt/1L1UFzf

The article is short, and it's no better than its title.

Esquire -- "Please Punch This Man in the Dick
Dammit, Bobby"

Now, I'm not a fan of profanity nor ad hominem attacks, so yeah this bothers me. But making things even worse is the complete lack of substance in either article. Whether or not I agree with them, I can respect rational arguments in each case. But the insult fest without any substance is pretty unbecoming of two prominent mainstream magazines, and to me it reflects both the dumbing down and the coarsening of our culture. I mean, both articles must have passed through an editorial process, right? So multiple staff people thought this was just peachy.

I'm fairly thick skinned, so if you call me a prude, fine, but I've got two school age kids and I think it's pretty unfortunate that kids today are being brought up in a culture that cares so little about standards of behavior.
