Self-Publishing previously published work?

samedi 10 octobre 2015

I've searched the forum, but I apologize in advance if this has been asked before and I managed to miss it.

A few years ago, I published a handful of short stories and novellas with a small e-publisher. The contracts for these stories have long since expired. I presume that alongside that, the rights have reverted to me? I've had emails from the publisher confirming that the books are no longer under contract, and the contracts themselves granted electronic publishing rights to the publisher for a fixed term of 2 years. As far as I can ascertain, none of these stories are still being sold anywhere online. They're not listed in the e-publisher's catalog, and they're not on Amazon, ARe etc.

A couple of these stories were part of an anthology, and another three are standalone novellas. I'm wondering how this affects ISBNs, given that the individually published works had their own ISBNs (and the anthologies obviously had theirs too, although the individual story didn't). I was considering publishing via KDP in the first instance, and I believe I'm correct in saying that they assign their own version of ISBNs to books? Would there be any conflict there if the book already had its own ISBN?

The stories were also edited by the small press -- is this something I need to mention? I'm planning on gutting and revising at least one of them to the point where it'd be substantially different to the original, but a couple of them are ready to go virtually as-is. Do I need to state somewhere that those stories were edited/published previously?

I'd like to self-publish a few of these older stories, mostly just to get a feel for self-publishing in general. Is there anything I need to bear in mind when it comes to previously published stuff vs. new?

Thank you for any advice!
