I am working on the rewrite of my YA fantasy novel and have hit a bit of a speed bump with my MC learning magic. She needs to learn how to use her magic enough that she can help fight of the villain at the end, but she didn't know that she had magic before the story started. She's never used magic before. In fact, up until just past the hook of story, she'd lived in our world and thought magic was just made up.
In the original version of the story, I had her learning it easily enough over the week of travel time she and her companion have to get to the villain. In this version, there is still the week of travel time, but I'm worried that there isn't enough conflict with her just picking the magic up pretty easily, especially given that she didn't even believe in magic before. But, there is also the fact that she only has a week to learn what she can before she is going to be forced into a magical battle with the villain.
Is there a way to make her struggle to learn the magic but still have her gain enough power in a quick enough period of time for it to be believable that she might stand a chance of helping beat a mage who trained for years? What kind of roadblocks could I put in her way to learning while still making the time crunch believable?
The magic system she is learning is elemental and there are no spells, potions, or incantations. It's basically all mental manipulation of whatever element she's working with.
I'm hoping that is enough information to answer my question, but if you need more, I'll be happy to answer questions.
