EDIT: Crap, I forgot to move this to Fantasy.
I was going to put this up in Story Research, but I guess that is more for quantifiable, real-world stuff.
Anyway, I'm putting together a sci-fi setting with something of a retro theme. I.e. computers are basically from the 80's and infantry still plays a large role in warfare.
One of the ways in which I justify this is that automated manufacture is severely restricted by law, to prevent mass-unemployment. So starships, weapons and whatnot are still mostly built by manual labour, yet the society doesn't really suffer for it since the workforce consists of billions and billions of individuals, so even a giant undertaking doesn't take long. So there's plenty of work and no real need for robots.
The idea is to create a society that is somewhat staid and utterly wrapped up in tradition, yet very stable, prosperous and no-one goes hungry. Would you say I'm on the right track?
Economics: Does this make sense?
