Help with surviving in the wildnerness

vendredi 2 octobre 2015

I'm writing a time travel story where my characters are unknowingly thrown through time. Anything they touch comes with them. The first jump takes them to the Rhaetian period.

One character has her dog and a messenger bag packed with all kinds of crap including a plastic water bottle. She is injured: fractured ribs, bruises over her body, a nasty concussion and a head wound. Two of the other characters also have bags, mainly with paper and things, and they both have plastic water bottles. (I do have a detailed list in case anyone would like to know exactly what they have between them.)

My questions are these:

How long would it take to build a basic shelter for five? (They jump through time roughly once a day and make a lot of jumps so I need to decide if it's worth the effort for them to build new shelter every time or just stick it out after the first few times. I've also read that you need a bed before anything else, to keep yourself off the ground.)

What is the best way to find water? (Just walk in one direction and hope for the best or is there a more strategic way to find it?)

Would it be better to find/have a way for them to boil the water, or make a filtering system with cloth and stones? (I read somewhere that boiling the water doesn't make it completely safe, so I'm wondering if the make-shift filter system would be better and/or worth wasting one of the plastic bottles? Or maybe both?)

I can't think of any more questions right now but I know I had more.
