Does this bug you?

I recently did a beta read of a middle grade book. Overall I really liked the book, but one thing REALLY bugged me throughout the entire thing and I'm trying to figure out if this is just a personal thing or if it would bother other people. Throughout the story the main protagonist's parents were referred to as dad and mom by the author rather than for instance "Bob's dad" or "Bob's mom." So, you'd have sentences like; "Dad smiled at Bob and then patted him on the head" VS "Bob's dad smiled at him and patted him on the head."

Sentences like that somehow felt way too personal to me...maybe it's just me? I did have a rather messed up childhood lol.
