For my latest WIP I am employing what I believe to be a unique form of FTL. Gravity Well FTL Interstellar Travel
How it works.
The concept requires an important premise.
The hypothesis is that gravity travels far faster than the speed of light. What is this premise predicated on? To date, science has been unable to see gravity. We know it’s there, we know it works, we just don’t know how. Here’s a question. If a black hole is black because gravity pulls all light back in, then how does it do it? Take a light particle—one photon travelling outward from a singularity. We know it travels at the speed of light. Consider it a race. Bang! The gun goes off and the photon has a micro-meter lead on gravity. If gravity is confined to only the speed of light, it can never catch the photon no matter how hard it tries. We know it does. How? All things constant, it can never catch up, unless it is faster. Final analysis: gravity is faster than light. For my purposes, I am assuming gravity is much faster than light.
Applied with gravitational mechanics (I made this term up) the FTL device creates a gravity well where only the gravity as it applies to the subject destination is allowed to interact with the ship. All other gravities are repulsed outside of the well. In essence, the space ship falls all the way to its destination picking up speed as it goes. No other form of gravity having any effect on it.
The question of dealing with everything in-between the ship and its destination needs resolution. The well opens up ahead of the ship and the gravitational pulls that are being repulsed act as a channel sweeper of all smaller items in the direct line of sight. Items such as micrometeorites, and even photons, are yanked aside by other gravitational forces than the target. Obviously, large items, other ships, large meteors, comets and alike, cannot be so easily moved so should they be in the direct line they will cause a disruption in the gravity well forcing the ship to slow.
So that’s how it works. Any thoughts? Will readers find it plausible? Acceptable? Or B.S.?
