there was a problem starting C:PROGRA_Z\CUTTER~1\CUTTER-1-DLL, the specified module could not be found.

I have been getting this notice for quite some time at startup. It was there on windows 7 and is still there after upgrade to win 10.

It seems to do no harm. I have run Malewarebytes and other antivirus agents and none seem to notice it.

I ran Avast's boot scan and it did not pick it up either.

I'm told that it is probably a left over from some maleware that has been removed or a program of sorts.

In "programs and features" it lists something called "CutterRunner". I've tried to uninstall it but just brings up the notice above.

It is very annoying!

Any thoughts?

Have I Been Spoiled by the DVD/Streaming Era?

I missed an episode of Minority Report, so now I'm physically and emotionally incapable of watching the rest of the series until I can watch it in it's entirety. It's fine, because I have no problem waiting until it's out on DVD, or until I can stream the series at my leisure, but certain people in my circle think I'm insane because of this.

Anyone else suffer from this affliction?

Harper Voyager Impulse US Open Submission Window Nov. 2-6 2015

(Haven't seen this posted yet. Mods, forgive me if this is a dup!)

HarperVoyager Impulse US is hosting an open submissions window for five days - November 2 to 6. According to the submissions page:

Quote:

While we're always on the lookout for full-length fantasy, science fiction, and horror, we're really in the market now for Urban Fantasy and Military Sci-Fi.
(Actually, although the web page title says Harper Voyager Impulse, the text says HarperVoyager US, so I'm not sure if this is an Impulse-only open sub.)

Gun control for the benefit of cops

Wisconsin gun shop owes millions for the injuries two policemen suffered as a result to negligent sales practice:

Funny how this doesn't bleed (yes, bleed) over into the injuries suffered by civilians in similar regard.

What are some different ways you'd like to see characters with mental disorders portrayed in MG

I am working on a short MG story that features two protagonists. One is dyslexic and the other is autistic. I have been doing my research and would love to get some of everyone's opinions on here. What are some common stereotypes of mentally disabled characters and what are some new portrayals of these types of characters that you'd like to see.

*i apologize if I'm using the wrong terms*

Calling all foster care experts/those with personal experience:

mardi 13 octobre 2015

You're a 16yo being moved from a group home to a foster family. What do you know/how informed are you of what's going on and what does this process look like/feel like? (This is your first placement; you haven't been in the system for long.)

Also what does it look/feel like from the other side of the equation-- the foster care workers and foster parents?

(Feel free to PM me if you'd like to respond more discreetly.)

Another Aussie checking in

Hello from Ohio

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking in (and learning a lot from) the forums the last week or so and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm an MFA fiction grad and college instructor with quite a bit of experience working with, and publishing in, literary journals, with about 30 short fiction pubs to date (including Indiana Review, North American Review, Third Coast, etc.)

I'm somewhat new to the business side, though, and since I just finished a novel this summer (my 4th lifetime, but the one with the best chance of publishing), I've been doing a lot of research on how to approach agents and the book industry. It's interesting how some priorities for writing more literary MFA-esque fiction for journals overlap with the publishing industry, while others...well...not so much.

I'm looking forward to contributing to the community and learning from all the different perspectives and expertise here at AW!

Best,
Nov

Quetions on simultaneous submissions

(Sorry about the spelling mistake in the title.)

Some agents say on their websites they understand writers making simultaneous submissions. They only want you to notify them when others have shown serious interest in your work. But what do you make of those who want you to tell them right away whether you are submitting to others?

writersworkshop.co.uk says it’s ‘good manners’ to admit that you are making multiple submissions but cautions: ‘. . . manners don't always get the fastest results. Up to you.’ Would appreciate comments.

Is it a bad idea to lie in your query letter?

I have nothing interesting to write in my query bio. Hypothetically, if I'm writing a novel about a cult, would it be a bad idea to say that I was once in a cult?

I can't find the query letter boards. Help!

never mind. I found it. I tried to delete this post but I don't know how.

Why would a perfectly good novel be rejected by so many agents?

Like Harry Potter.

Excuse you

Facebook says this post was suggested just for me. (Picture of a book ad)

What are you implying, facebook? I'm pretty offended.
Excuse you

John Saul

Apologies if someone's already asked this, but who likes John Saul?

A lot of horror fans seem to be down on him, but truth be told, he's in my top five. I really like how "Gothic" his novels are; full of ghosts and secrets, and hidden passageways. Anyone else dig him?

Description for a nameless action

How would you describe the act of lifting one's eyebrows repeatedly to imply a sassy reaction to a scandalous remark? As far as I know, there's no name for it. To specify, the eyebrows are supposed to be indicating an "if you know what I mean" vibe.

RWA/WF chapter ?

I write Women's Fiction so I am interested in joining the Woman's Fiction Writers Association. I know that it used to be part of RWA but they separated themselves from RWA and formed their own organization. Now I hear that RWA has a Romantic Women's Fiction Chapter.
Can someone tell me what the difference is so that I can decide what would benefit me most.

Thanks for any and all replies!

Just throwing this idea out there

I don't write fiction but here's an idea for you. No charge. Sometimes I look at a pretty woman's face and I try to visualize the skull under her flesh. This sometimes helps maker her less desirable and reinforces that beauty is only skin deep. Then I become a little less infatuated and can get on with my life, because usually it's someone I have no chance with anyway. Seems to me this would be a thing an insane serial killer may do. I'll leave the details to you. You may want to change the part about it making a woman less desirable, or whatever works for your story.

BTW, anyone else do this? Oh, and I wouldn't be a serial killer or anything. I do this peacefully and I don't tell anyone. I don't even do it that often so I'm OK.

Military rank

I'm putting together a space opera setting, and while that does leave me free to make up my own version of a lot of things

The setting is a large multi system realm with a unified military. One of the protagonists is the general at the top. The story starts with a coup and the general hurriedly gathers his forces on board a warship and speeds off to join up with other corps to organize a resistance. I'm wondering what rank his immediate staff would be, who he would interact directly with to issue orders, who would have the job of delivering status updates to him, and so on.

Thanks.
