Query, Philippa Longstrider and the Channel Pirates, by Richard B. Travis, EXCLUSIVE, RQUESTED from our meeting at the Greater Los Angeles Writers’ Conference last June.
Dear Ms. A,
Philippa Longstrider is a friendless fourteen year old orphan, living in Victorian London. She is an unusual girl with supernatural abilities she tries to keep secret. Her life is turned upside down when a stranger comes to her orphanage and plucks her from the only home she’s ever known. The stranger is her father, Captain Jack Longstrider, just returned after being marooned in the Far East. He tells her of her mother’s mysterious murder, when she was a baby. Fearing for his daughter’s safety, he takes Philippa aboard his airship, Dragonfly, making her a midshipman and part of his crew. Philippa must learn to work with the other midshipmen who also have supernatural abilities. She makes a friend and two powerful enemies jealous of her many powers and resentful of her special treatment as the captain’s daughter. Philippa is determined to fit in, but she must find an ally to help her understand and control her powers.
Captain Jack takes Philippa to the family estate where she meets her Aunt Agatha. Her aunt tells Philippa the truth about her mother, Evelyn Longstrider who is not dead as her father believes, but clings to life in the Spirit Realm. Evelyn reaches out telepathically to help her daughter as the danger mounts. Philippa is determined to understand and master her powers to bring her mother back to life.
Philippa and the other midshipmen are caught up in a crisis when Queen Victoria sends Captain Jack to hunt down the Channel Pirates led by Captain Nemo. Nemo is determined to destroy England and has the help of the Bullyboys, a gang of semi-human thugs created by the infamous Doctor Jekyll. While Philippa and her team are helping Captain Jack defeat Nemo and his pirates, a hidden enemy more powerful than Nemo or Jekyll is stalking her. Philippa does not want to put her family and friends in danger, but without their help she has little hope. She knows either way the demon will find her.
Philippa Longstrider and the Channel Pirates is the first in a series of young adult fantasy novels following the adventures of Philippa Longstrider a teenage girl with supernatural powers who must protect her family and friends from the dark forces rising against her.
