Novel successful, then suddenly dead in the water - help!

jeudi 27 août 2015

Hi friends,

So I self-published my first horror novel in October 2014. I was very surprised at my own success; selling between 40 and 80 copies a month through Christmas. In January, sales slumped, but picked up again in Spring.

Now, my book is completely dead in the water, selling 2-3 copies per month.

I think that this is a promotional issue and not a quality issue. Reviews of my books are polarized; there is a niche audience that strongly likes it, and then groups of readers who did not really like it because of its House of Leaves-style narrative. I mention this because I would think that if the book were just terribly written, people would mention it.

My drop in sales is directly correlated with the effort I've put into promoting it. In late 2014, my Author facebook page was abuzz, all of my friends were helping me campaign, and I was doing Amazon's free giveaways with mild to moderate success. Now, I can't really seem to figure out new ways to promote the book. All of the horror reviewers have been dead ends, the "pay to advertise your free days" has allowed me to break even at best, and my local newspaper will not do a press release or a story because the book is not "new."

What are some new ways that I could promote this book? I do hand out really nice business cards with my website and book cover, constantly. This results in the few sales I get. What else could I do?
