Just curious if there is a number out there.
For instance, I'm editing, trying to cut out a specific overused word in my MS. I know words like "to" or "and" or "have" are going to appear a lot in a manuscript, but other words that you focus in on and want to sort of limit your use, what would you say in terms of overall count when you control F to search for it? Obviously it depends on the length of the MS too.
My word is "just." I could obviously write an entire story without using the word "just" even once because it is an unnecessary word that can be replaced with alternatives. However, my story is told through online email communication, and the "justs" are but of the characters voices in this case, so I don't want to eliminate them. However, I do feel a need to cut down a bit. Right now, in 100 pages, I have 460 "Just"s and want to get it under 350. That's still over 3 per page which seems like overuse.
How many times does a word have to appear before it's "over used"
