I just finished up a novel that I've been working on since 2011. I have a MC where her main flaw is that she is self-centered and her inability to get out of her own head leads to the biggest problems in the novel. Her character arc has her eventually getting over it, and while I am trying desperately from keeping her being painted by the "annoying teenager" brush, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on it.
The character does give a damn about other people and is also a badass teenage ghost hunter, but I'm afraid her tendency to see her own problems as worse than everybody else's will discredit all of this. I've tried to tone it down by having it in the first person and her narration even points out that she's being a dick, but I wonder if that's not enough.
How do I keep MC from being too annoying?
