I found this forum yesterday when I was researching freelance writing.
I currently work as a politics and government reporter for a daily newspaper in a politically newsy south central Pennsylvania county. Prior to that, I worked for a daily newspaper in western North Dakota where in addition to covering the court system I also covered the ongoing oil boom's ups and downs.
While both jobs have been enjoyable and have allowed me to grow in both my writing and my ability to manage my time, I find that there is a major part of me that I miss. There is one path -- freelancing -- that will most likely allow me to recoup that missing part of me.
Several articles on freelancing have suggested that someone looking to pursue the path should write down the top three reasons for doing so. Making more money didn't make my top ten, even, and its not a major expectation, especially in the early stages.
Instead, my number one reason and goal is to be able to work wherever I am. My life has been defined by move after move and I truly enjoyed it.
My fiction writing grew greater with each new place I stumbled upon and explored because of the different perspectives, settings, people, and atmospheres that each place provided. For much the same reason, my nonfiction writing and journalism felt more important and deep because I was excited by the newness of each new experience. In short, being tied to a particular place is something that I would like to escape from.
So, I lurked around here for a couple hours and then joined. I look forward to helping other writers and learning from writers who have have experience in areas I lack or who could just help my writing as I can help theirs.
This forum already has me excited.
