Have your tastes changed?

As a writer and reader of fantasy, I've noticed that my tastes have changed over time. My first major inspiration behind a writing project was The Hobbit, so naturally I was into quests for a long time. My first series I wrote was a huge quest story. I've since rewritten it a few times, but I'm finding myself less and less interested in the questing. It gets repetitive. Go through Location A. Fight Monster B. Rinse. Repeat.

My stories are less repetitive than they were originally in this regard. I used to love this kind of story, but now I find myself drifting more toward the modern style of fantasy, which features less traveling. I still like a lot of the tropes that go with epic and high fantasy, but quests don't really do it for me anymore (at least as a writer).

So now I've ended up needing yet another rewrite on my original story. The characters, the world, and the basic plot are fine. But I need to rework the excessive traveling and combat with monsters. It's kind of disappointing because I was thinking this one was just about ready.

Part of the reason for this decision comes from my other works, which feature much less in the way of quests (and which I think are much stronger stories because of it). I still throw in a little bit, but nowhere near as much as I used to do.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with their writing? Do you think it's a natural progression for a writer to fall out of love with tropes and stories they used to love?
