Feeling Disconnected From Your Writing

dimanche 23 août 2015

I was just wondering if any other writers on here have ever felt disconnected from their work? Have you ever looked back at something you've written and thought, "Did I actually write that? I can only remember it vaguely."

Before I write anymore, I think it's important to explain a little where I'm coming from as I suffer from GAD and am facing a potential OCD diagnosis, so if anyone thinks this is a bit mental, that's why. =P

I somehow managed to convince myself that I hadn't even written a piece I had been worried about. I had worried that it was too inspired by a friend's, but after establishing (thanks to this forum!) that there was no risk of plagiarism there, I began to hone in on individual phrases. I did, however, find the initial plan I had written for it. This confirmed its origins and closely matched the final product, but one line stood out as being a bit, well, unusual for me, "formative years":

Music played a particularly poignant role throughout my formative years.

I then discovered that I had indeed used the phrase "formative years" elsewhere a few months before this piece was written, and "particularly" is a word I tend to use a lot anyway. However, I was just wondering, I'm assuming that in terms of accidentally repeating something I'd read elsewhere, this certainly wouldn't ever be classed as plagiarism as "a particularly poignant role" and "throughout my formative years" are two very common phrases?

I actually looked online and discovered that someone else had word-for-word used the majority of this line elsewhere so I'm assuming this is absolute evidence that I've got nothing to be worried about? "Tell me about an experience in your life where music played a particularly poignant role."

I also looked up a line I wrote the other day, and discovered that it had been used word for word elsewhere, so I'm trying not to obsess over this too much. I apologize in advance for the odd nature of this post!
