Balancing Show vs. Tell

samedi 15 août 2015

"Show and don't tell" is the bane of my existence as a writer, and has been for a long time.

Even when I was new to AW and I went into show vs. tell threads I'd end up wanting to pull my hair out, muttering to myself. Normally something alone the lines of, "Balance people, it's all about balance!" And as dramatic as that response may sound, I think it illustrates what sort of show vs. tell questions are frequently asked and how balance tends to be mentioned in passing instead of really explored.

As a writer I'm prone to telling too much, so I have to pick out spots where I can show more while keeping the pace or structure I was able to establish in my too telly version.

So here's my question. How do you as a writer use show vs tell to find the right balance for your stories? And what are some examples of writing you think combine show and tell in a well balanced way?
