We get frequent POV from this character and we're actually invested into them for some time. Later, they discover something that will help the main character move along the story, and after that, we don't see them any more.
It's as if these characters were made in the first place just to prevent a deus ex move.
Earlier today, I had about three examples. But right now, the only one that remains is Spook from the fantasy series, Mistborn.
