Teacher tells a student he's looking "way too ISIS"...

dimanche 16 août 2015

This isn't a current event, because it didn't make the news (as it shouldn't) but it does have a political component that I wanted to poll the opinions here. (The clue is in the poll.)

So there's this sixteen year old kid here whose parents are from India. He was walking with my daughter down a hallway crowded with students and faculty, and a teacher (who is generally considered an asshole) called out to him, "Hey __________, I don't know about that beard, man. You are looking way too ISIS these days." (________ has a very tidy, short, jawline beard.)

Now, I don't know what it's like to be a brown-skinned, black-haired man these days (or any days, if I'm honest) but is this funny? The boy was embarrassed and my daughter was horrified. The teacher had been loud enough that people turned around in the hall to see what he was hollering about.

I don't think the teacher should be in huge trouble or anything, but it just seems like a lousy thing for an adult in an authority position to lob out there in a time where brown-skinned, black-haired men are often "suspected" of being Muslim-and-maybe-of-a-certain-watchable-type. This kid has even said that it feels really weird how often he has to say "No, I'm Hindu." because he doesn't want to make it seem like he thinks being Muslim is a bad thing, but in fact, he's not Muslim.

It just seems like a teacher should know better.
