Hey all,
I'm preparing a self-publishing study group for seniors next year and I'm coming up with some questions I never thought to ask myself when I self-published my books. From my understanding of the group, they've already participated for several years in seminars like Write the Stories of Your Life, so they have poetry and memoirs. Most are interested in 'publishing' for personal reasons--they just want something to hold in their hands and give out as gifts.
Technically, I guess that's printing and not publishing, but you get the idea. I know what printing books will cost at Createspace, and I've been requesting quotes from local printers. As I wait for those to come back, I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing something.
Has anyone used a local printer like Speedy or Pip for books? My area has quite a few printers in the area, and for some reason people here are all about going local whenever possible. And that's really great, but I wanted to know if anyone had experiences with commercial printers (the kind that specialize in advertising and mailers) for printing their books and how it turned out.
I have a feeling the answer is that these books will not be as durable or professional as going with a book binder, so can I ask another question in advance: will the quality be noticeable to someone who really just wants to see their name on a book? Or should I encourage them to pursue one of the big PoD distributors like Createspace for reliability's sake? (It would be easier on me as a teacher/facilitator, but I want to understand all the options).
Has anyone created a project of this nature or helped someone with something like this? What services did you use and what pitfalls did you encounter?
Thank you for any advice or thoughts you have time to give.
