Here is my dilemma:
I want to have 3 chapters of story occur before the main plot line fully kicks in. It is the first in the series and the world and MC's actions are odd without backstory and to avoid info dump in the beginning (and you really do need it in the beginning not flashback later or the first scene starting the main story is jarring). I've written out the scene's and it works out to be 2 Chapters 5 years before the story and 1 chapter 3 years before the story.
I've seen other authors successfully do back story in a short prologue but I'm thinking 3 chapters (~9000 words) is a bit much for a Prologue.
Does long periods of time passing between chapters in the beginning of a story bother you if the rest of the story takes place in just a few days?
Should it still be called a Prologue and just be really long?
Any thoughts appreciated
