Police work - Finding a cell phone account without the phone

dimanche 16 août 2015

Montana, present day:

I have a low-income character with a cell phone. She's murdered, and the murderer takes her phone with him.

The police see she has no land line and suspect she has a cell, so I imagine they won't have much trouble just calling different phone companies and finding out if there was an account in the victim's name.

I'd like them to not get much information from the phone records. Is this realistic? She was working as a prostitute, so she'd have needed a phone to be contacted by her clients, and she might have made some effort to hide her tracks, but she wasn't very sophisticated and didn't have many resources (financial or otherwise).

So, what's the minimum amount of information police could realistically uncover, and about how long would it take for them to find it? Am I missing anything else that I should be paying attention to?
