My Kindle 2 is Breaking My Heart

lundi 24 août 2015

I have an old school Kindle 2 which I love dearly. However, lately when I download a library book, my Kindle 2 will not allow me to have it. The library books download and open just fine on my iPhone Kindle app, so I know it's not my account. But who wants to read a book on a tiny iPhone 5 when there is big beautiful paperwhite Kindle 2 to read it on?

It used to be that I could download a library book (azw file) to my computer, connect my Kindle 2 to the computer via USB and drag and drop or copy and past the library book into to Kindle's documents folder. The book when then be available to read on my Kindle 2. It worked like magic.

But now when I borrow a library book and attempt this, the Kindle either mysteriously "ejects" itself from my computer mid file-copying, or when it doesn't eject, book will appear on my Kindle but it's first page will be barely visible under an error message claiming I must delete the book download it to my Kindle over the wireless (Whispernet or whatever).

However, when I do that, the Kindle acts like it's downloading, then tells me it can't connect and that I should "try again later." But when I try again later I'm treated to the same frustrating results or lack thereof.

Here is what I have tried:

  • Rebooting the Kindle - no difference
  • Checking that it has wireless bars - it does
  • Rechecking and redoing the wireless connection - everything seems to be in order there
  • Ripping my hair out in chunks - no difference
  • Going to my Amazon account and instructing it to "deliver" the book to my Kindle - no difference

The interesting/frustrating part of all of this is it only happens with library books. If I purchase a Kindle book through Amazon, it gets popped into my archive and is available as soon as I switch my Kindle to online mode and sync it. So I can conclude that my Kindle "works," the wireless connection is OK, and my Amazon account is good to go.

Note that all public library books go through my Amazon account.

I've already been through Amazon's extensive Kindle help archives. I'm posting this here just in case any of you avid readers have a Kindle 2 and have solved this very frustrating issue. Please help.
