Okay back in the day (you know how it is when you look back on your old work and wonder "what was I thinking when I wrote this?" Those days) I tried following all the grammar and writing rules they taught in school. Which when you are writing a real book don't always work. However through experimentation and feedback from others I was able to fix those glaring flaws and receive less hate mail.

The most helpful of these was a process called MST, based of course on the old show Mystery Science Theater 3000 in which I would present a short story for public consumption and then and MSTer would pick his own characters to place in it and make fun of the story, any mistakes I made, and otherwise critique. The goal on their part being to make it funny like when the cast of Mystery Science Theater made fun of bad B-movies in funny ways while I tried to learn from my mistakes and fix them so that the stories I wrote were too good to make fun of in that way. Also the MSter has to actually be funny, not just complain or insult everything.

It's a process and you need thick skin, but it's effective.

Feel free to try it with your stories here and either just present them or pick another author yourself and see if they can do it.
