I've been skimming the "sticky" thread with people's areas of expertise and it seems that a lot of members have military experience. The story I'm currently writing involves a country issuing a draft in a time of war, but I know very little about drafting procedures. If anyone knows about this or especially has experienced it, I would love to hear anything you can tell me. Specific questions are:
- How do you find out you've been drafted?
- How do you get from point A (finding out you've been drafted) to point B (being shipped off to your first assignment)? What is the step-by-step process?
- Is there any kind of training involved for people with no experience or do they just give you the basics on the way there?
- I'm more interested in the technical details than the emotions surrounding the experience, but if you want to share, feel free.
I know different countries do drafts differently, but my story takes place in a made-up world so I'll only be using this as inspiration. Info from any country would be helpful!
