Good afternoon everyone. I'm having trouble designing an alien race for a short story that I am considering writing. The general plot is that aliens have begun coming to Earth and living amongst human beings. They are regarded as immigrants, having an entire division of the government set up for processing them appropriately and giving them assistance in finding appropriate housing/work/adjusting to cultural differences.
My main character is a young woman in her mid-twenties was been working as more or less an alien social worker for around seven years. She knows the routines, the policies etc. of her workplace but this is seemingly set aside when she meets a particularly intriguing member of a rather common integrating species. In general, she knows what they can and cannot do regarding interacting with humans, but this being draws her in mentally and makes her attempt to look beyond the strangeness of the form to the inner spirit. She struggles with her feelings as well as her training throughout the story, resulting in what I hope will be an enlightening tale about seeing not what people are but who they are inside.
Apologies for rambling. My problem is that my alien race, in my mind, doesn't necessarily have a true physical form and instead is more along the lines of the alien in the movie The Abyss. Able to shift its mass to various forms and communicating via telepathy, at least in the beginning. I'm having trouble determining if this is feasible in any way… Thoughts?
