Friends are what counts?

I just watched a BBC interview with the publisher who bought the first Harry Potter book. Lots of interesting comments.

One comment which immediately resonated with me is what he said that most pulled him into the books. Something like "Hogwarts and the magic and the owl messengers and all that was so wonderful, but what really riveted me was the friendships of Harry and Hermione and all the others."

It's true for me, at least, and my lady friend agrees about the few TV shows we watch (streamed to avoid the commercials) every weekend, having them saved up to spend two or three hours together sharing this despite our very different likes and schedules. (She's a hard-hitting business woman and I a dreamer in the world of words.)

The crime show Castle has adorable Nathan Fillion for her and hottie Stana Katic for me, but the really fun part is the camaraderie among the four main and a few secondary characters. Murdoch Mysteries ditto. The Big Bang Theory ditto.

John Green's Paper Towns was the most fun of his YA books for me because, in part, of the friendship of Q with Radar and Ben and (later) Lacey. (It's biggest lack for me is the small screen time between him and Margo. It may have been for others too. Leaving the movie I heard a couple behind me agreeing that they wanted a sequel where we found out more about her.)

Of course there's got to be more to a movie or a book than friends spending quality time together. In lone-wolf stories like the Bourne movies a lot to the appeal is the action involving unstoppable force Jason Bourne. But even there the most memorable scenes for me are the few minutes where Jason pours out his puzzlement and distress to a passing stranger. That is where we touch the hero's truest nature.

What about you? What stories involving friends especially stick out in your memory? How do you feel you can make best use of them in the stories you want to tell?
