Essentially, I'm looking for any information on how debt between nations has worked in the real world before the modern era. I've read some about ancient banking, but it seems very focused on individuals; I'm curious about how debt and bankruptcy worked on the scale of nations. How common was financing wars via debt? What were the repayment models, or different outcomes when kingdoms default? What are the questions I don't even know enough to ask?
