I didn't used to think I did this -- writing my way into a story. It's almost like a form of prewriting. A couple paragraphs to a page or two that are unnecessary to the story. But it feels like I needed to write the unnecessary parts to get to the story sometimes. However, I get that readers don't need to see that, and I should cut those parts. This is a little hard for me. I guess it's like killing my darlings.
How do you avoid the writing your way into a story? And how do you tell yourself it's okay to scratch the writing that shouldn't really be there? I'm having this problem with what I consider the best story I ever wrote. I should scratch the first two paragraphs, but I'm having a hard time letting go of them. If I had never written those two paragraphs, I wouldn't miss them. But because I did write them to be able to write this story, it's hard for me to admit to myself how useless they are when it comes to the finished piece.
