Business question - Do sole proprietorships show up in background checks?

lundi 24 août 2015

This might be an unusual question for this forum, but I haven't been able to get a good answer to this question and I'm thinking many of you might have the experience needed to get me an answer.

I self-publish a series of books under a pseudonym. They're reasonably successful, enough to justify continuing with the series, and I'm hoping to expand into merchandise. I would like to register my business (i.e., my pseudonym) as a sole proprietorship, so I can set up business accounts with banks and online resources like Paypal to help with sales. It would also help me publish on iBooks using my pseudonym (since apparently the publishing company has to be linked to some kind of bank account name).

However, while the nature of the books I write is nothing nefarious, the subject matter is not something I'd want to be associated with publicly. I am concerned that such an association could put current and future employement (my day job) in jeopardy.

So here's my question. If I do register as a sole proprietorship (with my state, I believe), would this information show up in the kinds of background checks employers regularly conduct when considering job applicants?

A friend suggested I create a separate company name to register and simply consider my pseudonym/publishing business a subsidiary of that "holding" company. It's just me involved, so it would be pretty simple. Any business I conduct would be through that holding company name, but at least background checks would only turn up the holding company name and not the pseudonym that would be linked to my books. But this plan would not be necessary if the business information is hidden from background checks completely.

I hope this makes sense. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll try to explain it further. Thanks in advance!!
