Hi all,
I'm rethinking the way I've started my ms and now am a little unsure of how or where to start it. The book is complete, but I recently got the crit that I used too much back story to start the novel and personally, I've always felt the first five chapters weren't smooth enough plot-wise, so there's some streamlining going on. I know the first three chapters are the most important and really wish to hook the reader.
But now I'm confused on which is best. Do I start with:
a) An interesting scene which sets the stakes, but where my MC isn't in their typical setting nor are they acting as they normally would.
b) Or, with my MC in a more typical day for them, where you're pulled in by this world and the MC's talents, but the stakes are still a mystery.
c) Something else.
What do you think is the best to start a book and hook a reader?
Any reading or links concerning this would be appreciated. Thanks.
