Selling an idea to a game company

vendredi 25 septembre 2015

Hi. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find such a thread. How difficult is it to sell a game idea to a video game company? Ideally this would be regarding the big, successful companies, but if you only know about the smaller and/or indie companies, then by all means, chime in.

Now I seem to recall hearing that it's actually more difficult to sell a game idea to a big company than it is to get a novel published by one of the major publishers. The gist was that the big games companies already have hundreds of really great ideas that they want to work on, but only a limited amount of time (and that games take longer to make than a novel takes to be edited, I suppose).

I ask this because I've had an idea for a video game that I would absolutely LOVE to play (and not just because it was my idea :tongue). However, if there's virtually no chance of selling it, then I may decide to leave it be for quite some time and work on other things (because yeah, I have tonnes of ideas to work on already).

So yeah... Being in my position as simply a writer (who also has some ideas about the game mechanics, though not the programming skills to make it happen), I would assume that it'd be pretty bloody unlikely for this to lead anywhere... That said, I also don't have the money to start an indie company of my own (ie. I wouldn't be able to pay the graphics / programming / voice acting / whatever type people. And yeah... When workers don't get paid, revolutions occur. :tongue).

Just thought I'd ask. It's not an immediate concern, but I've been thinking about it, so thought I'd ask. (And apologies if this has been covered before... I did look for such a thread, but couldn't find one.)
