One WIP I am working on is one in which my MC has low self-esteem. She has a strained relationship with her Dad, who really cares about her SATS scores and getting into a good college. Her Mom works all the time so MC feels like she doesn't care about her.
MC's esteem issues also come from her friends who she feels inferior around. She feels inferior because it seems like her friends can talk to guys easily, and are more confident. The book centers around main character challenging those negative beliefs and finding other ways to cope with things.
How can I portray low self-esteem without the MC being seen as whiny. She's 17 a senior in high school and is worried about going to college and being on her own.
