Lawrence "Yogi" Berra has died at age 90. For those benighted non-USers here at AW, Yogi Berra was one of the most beloved baseball stars of all-time. His only contemporaneous rival, in terms of public adulation, is perhaps Willie Mays. Before that, Babe Ruth, maybe. Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente and Henry Aaron and a few others are greatly admired for all the right reasons. But in terms of sheer delight, only Mays is a possible rival.
We almost forget that Berra was possibly the best catcher of all time, in the shadow of his unique, joyful personality and vast litany of malapropic quotations, which nearly always carried some nugget of wisdom, unintended or otherwise. Some have entered the American version of the language: "It isn't over till it's over," being just one example. Googling a list of Yogi Berra quotes is a worthwhile diversion. He was the Groucho Marx of baseball.
Yogi made it hard to detest the New York Yankees, even when they were the Saddam Husseins of baseball, dominating every season, it seemed for just about his entire career. There simply was never anybody like him.
Sadness at his passing, jubilation at his long life and what memories he has left us all.
