It's a fantasy setting. Tech in this culture is vague mish-mash of ancient Rome and Sengoku period Japan. My character needs to cross a channel roughly 20 miles wide to get to the mainland. The crossing point is also fairly close to the open sea, so the job calls for something beyond a rowboat, but I'm not sure how big I'd have to go. It's looking like a corbita would be the most appropriate vessel, but this culture does not have a strong naval tradition, and I'm wondering if there's a smaller vessel out there that can both handle the water and manage 4-5 knots an hour. Ideally, the smaller the crew the better.
This is a minor aspect of the story, so I won't need to show much of the journey itself. I just want to get the size of the craft and the travel time right.
If any further information is needed, I will do my best to provide it. :)
Smallest pre-industrial ship that can cross a 20-mile channel in good time?
