In my book the MC is going to go an international space station type thing at some point and meet a bunch of other alien species. I was just wondering what they might look like.
Now of course this all theoretical irl, and it is science fiction so I can pretty much make them look like what I want, but I was just wondering what some sensible restrictions would be.
What kind of requirements would there for a species to make it to space faring stage?
Obviously sentience - but weirdly I'm putting that low on the list. I think species can get a lot done without human-level sentience (think the birds that use tools and build complex structure) and that sentience doesn't necessarily guarantee civilisation (think dolphins - some studies put them on par with humans but they haven't even invented the wheel yet lol).
I think being able to move about (legs, wings, crawly things) and being to manipulate tools (opposable thumb, dexterous tentacle, telekinesis) are top of my list. There'll probably be a lot of broadly humanoid creatures - two arms, two legs - in my book because those meet the requirements and are easy for readers to imagine.
What about you?
