Hi, all. Been away for a while, trying to get back into writing more. And I have a bit of a question.
You see, I've had a certain setting sitting around in my head since middle school. Magic school for dragonriders, basically. I thought of it back when I was reading Harry Potter, so you can tell where that idea came from, but it's grown into much more of its own thing since then. Since I love dragons and I love the mix of mundane and magic provided by a 'fantasy school,' I figure I could successfully write this premise, instead of petering out a few thousand words in from lack of interest. But I'm worried...if people were to read it, would they automatically assume it's a ripoff of Hogwarts? Even if the characters, the world, and the plot are all different, am I cutting it too close to that 'derivative' label with the setting?
This thread doesn't just have to be about my work, of course. Where do you guys think the line between 'similar' and 'derivative' lies? To be honest, I think some works are treated way too harshly for supposedly being ripoffs. For instance, I constantly see Divergent being called a Hunger Games ripoff, and though there are reasons I don't particularly care for Divergent, I don't think it copies from Hunger Games much at all.
